Lymphedema & Swelling / Edema

Refers to swelling that generally occurs in the arms or legs (sometimes both).  Most commonly caused by damage to or removal of lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment; also from repeated surgeries, trauma or injuries which can lead to lymphatic system blockage.  Obstruction of lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes can cause an accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the affected region.

Potential treatments include: Specialized treatment and care of lymphedema includes Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) with manual lymph drainage, utilizing Class IV laser and vibration electric stimulation (Hivamat 200) for optimum fluid reduction and restoration of healthy tissue. Patient and caregiver/family education offered regarding ongoing care and maintenance; to include meticulous skin care, appropriate compression application and exercise.
