Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system in which gradual destruction of myelin (a mixture of proteins and phospholipids forming a whitish insulating sheath around many nerve fibers) occurs in patches throughout the brain or spinal cord or both, interfering with the nerve pathways and causing muscular weakness, loss of coordination, and speech and visual disturbances. Symptoms also include fatigue, pain, imbalance and decrease in overall activity levels.
Potential treatments include: Class IV laser and vibration electric stimulation (Hivamat 200) for treatment of muscular pain. Progressive range of motion and strengthening along with resistive exercise with weights to create a weight training program that fits patient abilities.
